Academy footballer turned project manager wins Young Project Manager of the Year award

A young sportsman who trained as a footballer before joining international construction and property construction consultancy Gleeds, has been named Young Project Manager of the Year at the APM Midlands Branch Awards.

Of the five candidates shortlisted for the accolade, no fewer than three were Gleeds employees. Hassan Amin and Tom Whiley were also up for the honour alongside twenty five year old project manager James, who was nominated for the role he played in the delivery of the GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratories for Sustainable Chemistry at the University of Nottingham.

Anthony Cork, Director of Gleeds in Nottingham, said of the news: “James is a truly deserving winner of this award. Since joining the company in 2014 he has worked extremely hard to balance the requirements of leading a complex project whilst studying for an MSc in project management. He has handled both challenges with composure, demonstrating a natural proficiency for the job and a real desire to succeed”.

Commenting on his achievements, James added: “I am very proud to have been named Young Project Manager of the Year for the Midlands. Following my early career change from sport science I have worked hard to build a career in this industry, so to have gained this kind of recognition is gratifying. Bringing teams of talented people together to deliver iconic buildings which will stand the test of time is a privilege, and I hope I can go on to inspire others to follow in my footsteps”.

In addition to his recent awards success, James has also been announced as one of just four employees selected for a place on Gleeds’ coveted Travel Scholarship. Staff from across the company were invited to submit proposals detailing which of Gleeds’ overseas offices they would most like to visit and what benefits a placement could deliver, both personally and business-wide.

James said: “I’m delighted that my proposal to investigate the sharing of construction best practice between the UK and America was chosen under the Gleeds Travel Scholarship. I can’t wait to immerse myself in our New York operation, learn from the team and bring those lessons to bear in the way we do things here in Nottingham. This is a fantastic initiative and a great opportunity to improve processes on both sides of the pond.”
